Bulking Up without Gaining Fat

Bulking Up

Regardless of the many examples that you might have seen of people gaining extra fat when bulking, it is still possible to gain muscle without adding too much fat. Everyone’s body is different, and some people will put on more fat than others when gaining muscle no matter what, but there are things you can do to keep your muscle gains as lean as possible. Keep in mind that gaining muscle without some fat is impossible, but you can keep your fat gains at a minimum by following some a few basic rules. An “eat everything” diet won’t work for gaining muscle without getting fat; you’ll need to eat higher quantities of natural and healthy foods instead of eating anything that you want. That’s the key – eat more of the good natural stuff, instead of allowing your appetite to run wild when you’re bulking. There are only a small ... Read More »

Building Muscle on a Budget

cheap muscle building tips

Tips to Build Muscle but not Break the Bank A lot of people this new year will be feeling the squeeze on their finances. I for one have noticed how fast the price of food is rising particularly meat and vegetables. Everything that gym goers need will undoubtedly have seen a price rise over the last few months and I’m sure it will continue to do so. If you want to build muscle you need to eat more. A lot of this extra food is going to have to be protein, probably the most expensive type of food. Beef, Chicken and fish are certainly more expensive than bread and pasta and adding this protein to every meal can cause costs to shoot up. When building muscle on a budget the last thing you can be is fussy. I speak on behalf of the UK when it comes to the different ... Read More »

How long does it take to build muscle?

Asking the question, “how long does it take to build muscle” is very much like asking how long is a piece of string? It varies from string to string, much like it varies from person to person. There are a variety of factors that are going to determine whether you are going to put on 10lbs in 10 months or 10lbs in 10 weeks. How long does it take build muscle genetic dependance Some people will have greater genetics than others when it comes to the makeup to building a muscly body. If you have struggled with putting on muscle in the past you may have poor genetics. Just because you have poor genetics doesn’t mean you will never put on muscle, you will just have to train and diet differently than someone that does. Genetics is one of many factors affecting the rate of muscle tissue growth, there are ... Read More »

Knee pain when squatting – The Remedy

These are my views on the best ways to tackle knee pain when squatting One of the biggest mistakes many people make when trying to build up some muscle, is not having the confidence to lift a heavy weight or perform technical lifts. Technique comes purely from practice and should always come before needing to muster the confidence to lift a heavy weight. Once technique has been mastered sometimes confidence will get in the way of ensuring the best possible lifts for muscle gains. The first confidence issue is the worry about getting injured. From my experience of having a range of injuries sometimes I prefer to just lift to ensure I am able to walk out of the gym at the end of the session. My growth however will suffer, and that deep burning pump is harder to attain. I then came across an interesting interview which discussed how ... Read More »

5 Killer Ways to get Bigger Arms!

5 Easy Recipes – How to get Bigger Arms Big arms are very much the show muscles much like abdominals and loads of guys want to have them. Overtraining the arms is quite common, from my experience training too frequently doesn’t result in brilliant growth. Likewise isolating the muscle in a concentration curl/seated bicep curl is not as effective as incorporating heavy barbell curls in your workout. 1) Vary Your Grip on Bicep Curls In relation to Barbells: When you grip a straight bar you can either grip it so your hands are outside shoulder width apart, at shoulder width or inside should width. Gripping the bar at different positions is going to work a slightly different part of the bicep if you are doing curls. As a rule of thumb you should be doing equal amounts of each grip, this will hit all parts of the biceps giving you ... Read More »

‘Bulking‘ is an ambiguous phrase thrown around the gym. Some people perceive it to be putting on as much mass as physically possible by eating whatever they can get their hands on. It’s also mainly of a concern to the ectomorph (skinny people) when beginning their training routines. If you are a endomorph then you will have little interest of gaining even more fat! Bulking is it for me? The idea of a bulk is ensuring that your body has the optimum environment for building new muscle. If you have a very low body fat percentage, something around 6% then putting on pure muscle is going to be a slow process if your bodyfat remains constant. The body at this point is much more inclined to put on fat as it’s more useful in storing energy, boosting immune system, keeping you warm etc etc. This is where the idea of a ... Read More »

How Do Muscles Grow?

If you were asked how do muscles grow? What would be your response? It dawned on me that I didn’t actually know how muscles in fact grow. Obviously some form of stress needs to be applied in order to induce this growth, otherwise gym work would be utterly pointless. Hopefully not speaking purely on my own behalf but the common way it is seen is that the weights and exercise cause damage to the muscle. The muscle will then take nutrients and repair itself even stronger. It’s this repetitive process that gives you size, strength and stamina etc. This is very basic and my inner geek was not satisfied with this simple principle. So what I have researched is a more biologically in depth way in which muscles grow and how all the proteins you try so hard to intake actually help in muscle growth. How do Muscles grow – Basic ... Why you Need Powerlifts to Break Through a Plateau

Break the Mould An exceptionally important aspect of increasing your strength, fitness, you name it, is the importance of a sense of progression. It’s a hurdle that everyone will most likely hit, stopping gaining, a point which separates the strong from the weak. If you are trying to build up muscle, tracking your gains is mighty important. If for the last 3 months you have been unable to increase the amount of weight on the bench press then by logic you are not progressing. A common reason for this happening is because you have not varied your workouts. The body is a clever thing and will go out of it’s way to resist affects placed on it. If you simply repeat the same old workouts and movements each week then you may reach a plateau, then start to lose interest because your not gaining. This doesn’t simply relate to gaining ...
